About this event

Over a decade ago the University of Westminster and Media Diversity Institute created one of the most innovative MA courses globally: the MA in Diversity and the Media. This course seamlessly combines media theory and hands-on practical training in journalism related to social and cultural diversity. The global media industry is not the same as it used to be. In recent years societal and global developments have shaken the media sector and have highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusion. These changes include the global Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements; the rising attacks on freedom of expression and journalism; the increased power of social media; the influence of cancel culture and culture wars in society; and the impact of fake news that can lead to hate crimes.

In light of the 10th anniversary of the MA in Diversity and the Media, the University of Westminster and Media Diversity Institute are bringing together academics and practitioners whose focus and expertise is on media and diversity. The speakers will reflect on developments in the media sector in recent years and will discuss their expectations for the future. Finally, they will discuss the ways that diversity can be mainstreamed in the media and how a better environment can be created for future practitioners globally.
